Low plasma vitamin C levels are a risk factor for CV morbidity and mortality in chronic renal disease patients. Of course there are articles proving the same reduced mortality and morbidity from higher levels of plasma vitamin C in every condition, particularly Cancer.

Since plasma Vitamin C levels must be high if you want to have 100 mg levels of vitamin C in urine, you now can avoid the need for measuring plasma levels of vitamin C using convenient affordable urine Vitamin C testing. Now you can test several times during a patient’s follow up treatment to be sure they always are fully protected.

I suggest that you make the VITACHEK C urine stick test a routine test for all patients in your office. Azad Rastegar takes us on a journey through Epigenetics, Epigenome and the DNA in a way that brings light to what may seem to most lay people as a  subject a little over our heads.

Randy Jirtle the director of the Epigenetics and Imprinting Laboratory at Duke University writes in an article titled ‘What Does Epigenetics tell us about Ourselves? ‘Epigenetics, which literally means “above genetics,” refers to the study of heritable changes in gene function that occur because of alterations in the epigenome rather than mutations in the genome. To make this easier to understand, think of the genome—the DNA sequence—as being like the hardware of a computer, while the epigenome is like the software that tells the computer when, where, and how to work.

We inherit one genome, so it is identical in every cell in our body. Yet our body has somewhere between 250 and 300 distinct cell types. The only way this can occur is if, during development, each cell type is instructed by growth factors and other chemical signals to turn on a unique set of epigenetic programs. Once established, these programs, or epigenomes, are maintained during cell division throughout our life.

Thus, having a brain cell and a skin cell in a person is analogous to having one computer running Word and another running Photoshop. The computer hardware is identical, just like the genomes in the different cell types are identical, but each computer is doing something different, just as each cell is functioning differently because the epigenomes are not the same. The programming is chemical in our cells rather than being done with ones and zeros. The downside of using chemical epigenetic codes to program cell function is that our epigenome is vulnerable to being modified by the environment.

Scientists are now attempting to decode the epigenetic programs of life—line by line—with the use of DNA sequencing machines. This human epigenome project is vast in scope and critically important to deciphering the molecular mechanisms by which we evolved and currently function biologically. At a talk I gave, someone asked me how long I think biologists will be studying the epigenome. My answer was, “Forever!” As long as we are on earth, we will be trying to understand our epigenetic programming, how it works, and how environmental alterations cause diseases. In effect, epigenomic research ultimately will be synonymous with biological research. Epigenomics will be biology.’

There are more than 6 billion people on our planet — each a massive collection of about 100 trillion cells. How do these cells know what to do? What tells them to work together to keep your heart pumping, brain thinking and bones growing?

The answer lies in a long, winding molecule called deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. The DNA contained within each of your cells carries the instructions needed to build and maintain the many different types of cells that make you, you. Researchers call this complete set of DNA instructions a “genome.”

The Human Genome Project (HGP) was an international scientific research project with a primary goal to determine the sequence of chemical base pairs which make up DNA and to identify and map the approximately 20,000–25,000 genes of the human genome from both a physical and functional standpoint.

It was one of the great feats of exploration in history – an inward voyage of discovery rather than an outward exploration of the planet or the cosmos; an international research effort to sequence and map all of the genes – together known as the genome – of members of our species, Homo sapiens. Completed in April 2003, the HGP gave us the ability to, for the first time, to read nature’s complete genetic blueprint for building a human being.

The “genome” of any given individual (except for identical twins and cloned organisms) is unique; mapping “the human genome” involves sequencing multiple variations of each gene.

Antineoplaston treatment is an experimental therapy offered by the Burzynski Clinic, currently available only within clinical trials.

Antineoplastons (ANP) are peptides and amino acid derivatives, Dr. Burzynski first identified naturally occurring peptides in the human body that control cancer growth. He observed that cancer patients typically had deficiency of certain peptides in their blood as compared to healthy individuals.

Burzynski Clinic offers variety of alternative cancer treatments for patients diagnosed with over 50 different types of malignancies.

For many years scientists have been trying to understand why some patients respond better to similar cancer treatments better than others. Recent studies have shown a strong link between patient’s gene expression and the effectiveness of a cancer treatment. The understanding that all cancers are associated with changes in gene expression (activity) led to dramatic changes in the diagnosis and therapy of cancer and to creation of personalized medicine. Personalized medicine tries to identify these relations through detection of genes involved in cancer.

After determination of a sequence of the human genome it was found that only 10% of genes are active in adult life. This means that approximately 90% of our genes are silenced. The system of biochemical factors called epigenome consists of molecular switches that silence and activate the genes during our life.

At the age of 25, the body has the optimal combination of active genes, but soon thereafter, groups of genes are gradually turned off during the aging process. Silencing of tumor suppressor genes triggers increased activity of oncogenes leading to mutations and increasing the risk of cancer. Decreased activity of tumor suppressors and increased activity of oncogenes lead to cancer.

Based on the current knowledge of the epigenetic mechanisms the new approach in medical oncology is to reverse the relationship between the oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. ¹Gene expression is a process, during which a gene’s DNA sequence is converted into the structures and functions of proteins.

Gene-targeted medications are drugs that selectively block the growth and spread of cancer without affecting the healthy cells. Targeted therapies interfere with cancer cell growth differently than cytotoxic chemotherapy and at various points during the development, growth, and spread of cancer. By switching off the signals that make cancer cells grow and divide uncontrollably, targeted cancer therapies can help stop the growth of cancer cells.

Targeted medications have shown to be easier tolerated than standard chemotherapy and radiation with no side effects or minimal adverse reactions noted.

There are currently over 20 targeted therapeutics approved by the FDA (as of June 2007). This number grows rapidly with the advancement of the research in genomics. All of the approved gene-targeted medications are available for treatment at the Burzynski Clinic. The combination of targeted medications is customized for each patient and determined by the type of oncogenes involved in patient’s cancer (Personalized Treatment).
